Quick Overview

A series of booklets, compiled from the writings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, on specific subjects covering almost all aspects of human life, our daily strivings and our inner needs. Although a compilation, in its very nature, is likely to have a personal and subjective approach, a sincere attempt, however, has been made to be faithful to the vision of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.

It is hoped that these booklets will inspire the readers to go to the complete works and will help them to mould their lives and their environments towards an ever greater perfection.

Excerpts:

  • It was the conditions of matter upon earth that made death indispensable. The whole sense of the evolution of matter has been a growth from a first state of unconsciousness to an increasing consciousness. And in this process of growth dissolution of forms became an inevitable necessity, as things actually took place.
  • (What happens after death) When the body is dissolved, the vital goes into the vital plane and remains there for a time, but after a time the vital sheath disappears. The last to dissolve is the mental sheath. Finally the soul or psychic being retires into the psychic world to rest there till a new birth is close.
  • The doctors have declared that you are dead, but the spirit of your form lives, and not only does it live but it is conscious in most cases. But that lasts for seven or eight days and afterwards it is dissolved. ….. I’m speaking of ordinary people.
  • Hell and heaven are often imaginary states of the soul or rather of the vital which it constructs about it after passing. ………… One may pass through these as the result of things formed in the nature which create the necessary affinities, br the idea of reward or retribution is a crude and vulgar conception which is a mere popular error.
  • (Protecting the departed) The one thing one should not do is to hold them back by sorrow for them or longings or by anything else that would pull them nearer to earth or delay their journey to their place of rest.
  • Death is not the solution (to difficulties), far from it. Death is a clumsy and mechanical return to the endless round of existence and what you have not achieved in one life, you have to do in the second, generally in much more difficult circumstances, ……….. To enjoy a peaceful and eventless death you must prepare for it. And the only effective preparation is the abolition of desires.
  • Of all the fears the most subtle and the most tenacious is the fear of death. …… (How to overcome this fear) The first and most important point is to know that life is one and immortal. Only the forms are countless, fleeting and brittle. This knowledge must be securely and permanently established in the mind and one must identify one’s consciousness as far as possible with the eternal life that is independent of every form, but which manifests in all forms.
